An exciting opportunity has arisen at Pencarrow Stud for a motivated and experienced individual to join our team as Broodmare Manager.
Pencarrow Stud is a private boutique operation based within minutes of Hamilton City. It is operated from a main farm of 400 acres accompanied by a hill farm for wintering mares. The stud foals 50 mares annually and presents a draft of about 25 yearlings at NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series.
It also operates a racing team of fillies retained from the annual foal crop. The Broodmare Manager would oversee the breeding program of approximately 60 mares. The position has an immediate start date and offers the opportunity to work with quality bloodstock on a well-appointed property.
The Pencarrow Stud brand is well established and highly respected. The successful applicant will assist with carrying that legacy into the next phase of the stud's development. A very competitive and complete remuneration package is also available.
Responsibilities include and is not limited to:
• Day-to-day operations, handling mares and foals and organising staff
• Record keeping – daily diary entries, maintaining breeding records and following a seasonal plan
• Involvement with Health and Safety operations and meetings
• Foaling season operations
• Liaising with the general manager regarding horse health and husbandry matters

The successful applicant will have previous experience in the day-to-day care and management of racehorses. This role will encompass not only spelling but rehabilitation also.
The candidate will need to have the ability to work alone as well as in a team environment and possess excellent communication skills as the successful candidate will liaise directly with clients and trainers. Tasks include:
• Supervise daily stable operations.
• Supervise daily care of horses, including routine health checks, recognising ailments and signs of injury.
• Implement and monitor feed and nutritional program, preparing and distributing feed.
• Supervise raceday preparation and post-race activities.
• Implement compliance in applying safe systems of work and practices, including identifying and reporting risks and incidents.
Desirable:
• Experience in supervising an operational team, with the confidence and willingness to foster and lead a positive, respectful, inclusive and safe workplace culture.
• Well-developed husbandry and horsemanship skills with a sound understanding of training and practices.
• Sound knowledge of horse health care and welfare requirements, including prevention and treatment of injury and disease.
• Strong presentation and communication skills.
• Current Driver's Licence with a preparedness to work out of hours and weekends.
Successful candidates must have a passion for the thoroughbred and racing industry, have the ability to both lead and work in a team environment, possess great attention to detail and take pride in both the work they and their team perform.
Experience in a similar position will be highly regarded.
